Pen and Wash and Pencil sketching is often overlooked as an essential preparation for planning a painting or capturing fleeting visions whilst travelling . This quick sketching method can often spark the emotional feeling of the moment whilst noting important elements like light source, shadows and character of the scene.
I find those who attend my workshops in watercolour, enjoy this introduction with drawing and applying wash. It has the benefit of setting the scene, enabling a study of composition, perspective and light source that can be assessed and corrected before a painting is started.
The little sketches above are out of my sketch book diary, just like a written diary, they are not all perfect but they record ideas from images and can stimulate a memory, a place, months after they were drawn!!!

Now look at pen and wash with new eyes. This way of recording the visual scene, the local colours and the emotion attached to the place is artwork in itself, a delight to enjoy!
